Gigi Hadid

Last week, model Gigi Hadid, whose real name is Jelena Noura Hadid, along with her friend, influencer Leah Nicole McCarthy, was arrested in the Cayman Islands on July 10.

The authorities reported that they were taken into custody on charges of alleged possession of marijuana and the importation of marijuana and related paraphernalia, according to Cayman Islands Customs and Border Control.

The pair, “who arrived on a private aircraft to the Cayman Islands from the United States were arrested following a search of their luggage, and a small amount of marijuana was recovered,” the islands’ border authorities said.

In a statement given to CBS News, a spokesperson for Hadid explained that the 28-year-old was carrying marijuana that had been legally obtained in New York City with a valid medical license.

“Gigi was traveling with marijuana purchased legally in NYC with a medical license,” a representative for Hadid confirmed to People magazine. “It has also been legal for medical use in Grand Cayman since 2017. Her record remains clear, and she enjoyed the rest of her time on the island.”

In a statement to CBS News, a representative for Hadid said the 28-year-old was traveling with marijuana purchased legally in New York City with a medical license.

“During the search of their luggage, ganja and utensils used for the consumption of ganja were found in the luggage of both passengers,” according to the report. “The quantities were relatively small and were seemingly for personal consumption.”

That’s true. However, it is illegal to travel in and out of the territory with cannabis.

The Marl Road reported they were charged two days later for “suspicion of importation of ganja and importation of utensils used for the consumption of ganja.” They later appeared in front of a summary court, pleaded guilty and agreed to pay a $1,000 fine.

“Her record remains clear and she enjoyed the rest of her time on the island,” Coletta said. The model later shared a number of Photos from the trip on social media.

She captioned a photo posted Tuesday: “All’s well that ends well.”
